Steps for young adult with Morquio syndrome

A young adult student of a very small stature (Morquios syndrome) couldn’t reach the toilet bowl to sit on it independently whilst at school (he required lifting to enable him to sit on the toilet, a requirement that nor the school or his carer could accomodate).

4-wheeled Walker adaptation

An elderly and frail client needed her 4-wheel walker to be adapted to give her better support to walk within her home. Whilst initially it was thought the support was only needed on one side, it became clear there was a great deal of benefit to adapt both sides and produce a balanced walker with gutter rests.

Coat Maid

An ingenious mechanism to allow a lady with severe arthritis in both shoulders to be able to put her coat on herself without needing help from anyone else.

Touch sensitive remote control

Our engineer, Neil, constructed a touch-sensitive remote control for our client, who is a lady that suffers from MS, Arthritis and respiratory problems, which made it previously difficult for her to operate the press buttons on her electric bed remote. She can now operate these herself, without needing to wake her husband at night for bed adjustments.

Handlebar extension

A client asked if we could help with an extension to her handlebar on her first bike. The client liked to support her hand and required the handle bar to be smaller and closer to her body.

Non-spill cup carrier

A design for a cup or mug carrier for people who are unsteady on their feet, which greatly reduces accidental spills. We have made over a dozen of these for various clients who have suffered from Parkinsons, strokes and the like.

Adapted thin and light cutlery.

Our client has difficulty with normal cutlery and wanted some which were as light as possible and with thin handles. She wanted the fork ans spoon to be angled. She had tried various commercially available products but , although some were light, these had very large handles.

Bed lever/rail extension

The client has a profiling bed. The tallest bed lever/rail available has been fitted by the NHS. This is still not high enough. An extension piece was made to clip to the existing rail with additional stiffening.

Adjustable Wrist Support

Paul has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy which has left him with extremely limited movement, literally just a few fingers and his mouth and eyes.
Paul loves using his computer with a glide point mouse (touch pad). The problem is getting, and keeping, his hand in just the right position to operate the touch pad.
I provided a foam wrist support on top of an adjustable platform. It is now easy for a carer to adjust the wrist support up or down my small amounts.

Device to put on a coat

Milton Keynes panel were asked if we could help a client to put on his outdoor coat. He could not move his hands to behind him, which meant putting on a coat in the normal way almost impossible.
A powered device was made which, under the control of the Client, lifts the coat up his back then releases it when the coat collar reaches shoulder height

Fly-by-wire kids tractor

Like most small boys Theo loves tractors, but when you are born with really short arms it makes steering a challenge. So Gerry, a fellow volunteer from the York panel, and I set about creating a safe fly-by-wire push along tractor to make the 20-month old lad very happy.
