Steps for young adult with Morquio syndrome

A young adult student of a very small stature (Morquios syndrome) couldn’t reach the toilet bowl to sit on it independently whilst at school (he required lifting to enable him to sit on the toilet, a requirement that nor the school or his carer could accomodate).

Conversion of electric screwdriver

A client has problems gripping objects, especially small items. He suffers with Hereditary Motor Sensory Neuropathy (Charko Marie Tooth). This is progressive and has worsened in the last two years. He also has problems walking, needing axillary crutches.

Treadmill adaptation for boy with cerebral palsy

Four-year-old boy has cerebral palsy and as part of his treatment he uses a treadmill to help strengthen his legs. He can’t reach the handrails so a lower set has been made to attach to the original rails.

Electrification of recumbent trike for 9 year old boy

A 9 year old boy with cerebral palsy uses a recumbent trike to strengthen leg muscles, but he is not strong enough to pedal up hills. The project provides electrical assistance by modifying the trike to add a motor, battery, pedal sensor and control module. This was complicated by the larger wheel required for the motor necessitating relocating the rear brake, fitting a new brake lever with cut out switch and emergency kill switch for the electrics.

Walker stability

A 9 year old boy with cerebral palsy uses a Lecky walker for mobility. As he has grown, the walker is no longer sufficiently stable when he is moving around outside. The project was to angle the large wheels of the walker like a sports wheelchair to increase the track width and improve stability.

Dementia activity board

The client is a retired engineer now living in a care home. He is suffering from Alzheimer’s and keeps trying to dismantle things in the home. The care staff wanted an activity board to keep him occupied. Some are commercially available but none of them seem to match his needs.

Nappy changing frame

First time mum found it difficult to change a dirty nappy with limited use of her right hand. Her wriggly baby was forever putting his foot in the wrong place!

Adapt child’s scooter

A three year old child was born with no legs below the knees and no arms below the elbows, hence no hands or feet. He wanted to use a scooter.

Toilet seat back rest

A severely disabled wheelchair user needed a back rest for the toilet to allow her to continue living independently. No suitable commercial product available.

Cigarette lighter

Client was a quadriplegic with a small amount of movement in one hand. He smoked “roll-up” cigarettes that needed frequent lighting.
